Combinatorical Chemistry and Solid Phase Synthesis - A Tour |
|
|---|---|
Introduction
A lot of new methods and techniques in industry base on a new and fast developing area in
chemistry - Combinatorial Chemistry. In order to deliver undergraduate students with the
necessary knowledge some promising efforts to integrate this new field into the timetable of
education have been attempted. To cross the boarder of theoretical understanding we established a special laboratory course for combiantorial chemistry and solid phase synthesis. Next to already published experiments our main interest was to offer experiments which incorporate the aspects split-mix and parallel library design. Participating in this laboratory course the students had the chance to get an impression of the practical approach (working with a mini-block system!) towards making a lot of compounds at the same time with a minimum of individually work. Within the framework of Medicinal Chemistry we offer a two weeks intensive laboratory course at the University of Regensburg combined with seminar. Approximately 10-15 students per semester can join this course. (Later on, depending on the interest, the number of students is planed to be doubled.) The seminars are given by the participants. The seminar topics are usually distributed two weeks before and discussed if necessary. Every morning starts with the seminar, which consist of two or three 20 min presentations. These seminars are supervised by one of the professors of the department. Laboratory work is done in the afternoon. The students are working in small groups (2-3 members per group) and perform two- or three experiments. The course is given by a post-doc scientist with the help of two teaching assistants, preferably Ph.D. students who already took part in this course. Next: Topics of seminars |
